As another summer season begins on Nantucket, everyone is excited about the new shops in town. I am so grateful that we still have many businesses here that have been around for decades, some since my childhood. Here’s a look at some of these wonderful legacy businesses and well-known shops.
- Murray’s Toggery Shop — At the top of Main Street, Murray’s is one of the island’s most iconic retailers, famous for the original Nantucket Reds. The Murray family has operated the store since the 1940s. Today they offer many popular brands for men, women and children.
- Mitchell’s Book Corner — A beloved independent bookstore established in 1968 and still a Main Street institution. I always loved going to Mitchell’s when I visited the Island as a child with my family.
- Craftmasters of Nantucket — Established in 1974 and known for scrimshaw, jewelry, and classic Nantucket gifts. We always made a stop at Craftmasters during our family trips to the Island in the 70’s and 80’s. I now shop there for special unique gifts.
- Nantucket Looms — Founded in 1968 as a weaving studio and now one of the island’s signature home and textile shops.
- Antiques Depot — A longtime Nantucket antiques destination with roots going back decades and ownership connected to island antique dealers since the 1970s.
- The Hub ---In the heart of downtown at 31 Main Street The Hub is a go to for coffee and other beverages, food, gifts and souvenirs.
- Erica Wilson ---This downtown staple has been at 25 Main Street for decades. Founded by Erica Wilson, the “First Lady of Stitchery”, the shop draws needlework enthusiasts from near and far. Now run by her daughter Vanessa, the shop has become a destination for unique fashion, custom designs, and collaborations with designers from around the globe.
- Stephanie’s ---- For 29 years Stephanie’s has been part of the Nantucket retail scene. From housewares to hostess gifts and beautifully curated clothing, it’s a must stop on any trip into Town.
- The Four Winds --- Located in the heart of Nantucket at 8 Straight Wharf in a historic blacksmith building, this is the Island’s oldest gift shop. It started in 1970 and was always one of our first stops off the boat for a rope bracelet! Today they have lots of items to remember your Island visit.
These long time independent shops are a big part of the fabric of downtown Nantucket and help the Island retain its character and sense of continuity and community. Shop local!
